Eighth Grade Week 4: September 25-29, 2023

You are off to a great start this year.  I am ALWAYS available to help you.  I love you and I am proud of you!

We need to start off Monday talking about the readings from last week for He Leadeth Me, All Creatures Great & Small and Uprising and to tell me what book you have selected for your Geography Project.

ISEE Study - Remember that on the ISEE there is no penalty for guessing.  If you don't know the answer to a question, take your best guess.
1.  Connotation 40-61 on pages 54-55.
2.  Persuasive Passage #2 on pages 102-103
3.  Persuasive Passage #3 on pages 104-105
4.  Exponents 1-15 on pages 159-160.
5.  Percents 1-12 on pges 174-175.

Math  - Chapter 1 of Elementary Algebra
Please come ask me if you don't understand something she taught you or have other questions.  I will be grading your work each day so that we can discuss anything you didn't understand before the next lesson.
  1. Chapter 2, Lesson 3.  Watch video and do all of Set 1 and all of Set 2.
  2. Chapter 2, Lesson 4.  Watch the video and do all of Set 1 and Set 2.
  3. Chapter 2, Lesson 5.  Watch the video lesson and do all of Set 1 and all of Set 2.
  4. Chapter 2, Lesson 6.  Watch the video lesson and do all os Set 1 and all of Set 2 except skip #9.
  5. Chapter 2, Summary and Review. Do all of Set 1.

Religion & Bible History  (nothing on Wednesday)

  • Read Faith and Life 8 Chapter 4.  Discuss with Mom.
  • Read Heavens Roar page 8-9.  Read your Bible Mark 2:1-17. 
  • Read Bible History Unit 5 Part 3 and do the questions.
  • Read He Leadeth Me Chapter 4 and be prepared to discuss with Mom when done.

Language Arts (Nothing on Wednesday)

Literature We are starting Screwtape Letters this week, which is a satirical work by CS Lewis in which he relays the fictional written correspondence between a wise old devil, Screwtape, and his nephew, a novice devil named Wormwood.  Screwtape coaches Wormwood in the process of winning the soul of a young man for “Our Father Below,” Satan.

  1. Read the two quotes before the Preface, the Preface and Letters 1-3. Come see Mom to do the study questions out loud.  
  2. Read letters 4-6 and come see Mom to do the study questions.
  3. Read letters 7-9 and come see Mom to do the study questions.   
  4. In letter 8, Screwtape says, “Now it may surprise you to learn that in His efforts to get permanent possession of a soul, He relies on the troughs even more than on the peaks; some of His special favorites have gone through longer and deeper troughs than anyone else.”  Explain this quote in writing and give examples of saints or others who have experienced this.

English From the Roots Up (Skip Wednesday)

  • Learn the three new roots for this week - kinesis, phone, sonus
  • List as many extra words that fit the new roots as you can on a piece of paper.
  • Study the roots throughout the week.  Be sure you study the last three week's roots also. 
  • WE WILL HAVE A TEST NEXT WEEK ON THE FIRST 4 WEEKS ROOTS.

  3. Watch A History of US Episode 8 - Boom on the TV.  Do discussion guide and vocabulary with Mom.
  4. Read Chapters 27 & 28 on Teddy Roosevelt.  Look at Cobblestone pg 6 on Roosevelet.
  5. Read Book 8 chapter 20 & 30 on the annexation of Hawaii.
Foundations 

Lesson 1

  1. Read through the second, third and fourth sections on student strategies (until you get to the next heading in green).

Lesson 2

  1. Read about note-taking. It’s short, just at the top.
  2. It talked about reviewing your notes that same day. Another thing you can do the same day, is to go into your learning with a question. A question peaks curiosity which excites the brain to learn. Write a question that will push your learning further for each of the courses you are taking.

  1. Read this Article on Taking Notes in Class and From Textbooks

Lesson 4

  1. Watch the video on how to take notes.

Lesson 5
Read All Creatures Great and Small Chapters 10-12 and come talk to Mom about what you read.  This doesn't have to be saved for Friday, you can read it over the course of the week if you wish.

World Geography
  1. Watch this video on plate tectonics and read this article on forces that shape earth.
  2. Read Smithsonian Geography pages 12-49.  This is a lot of pages but many pictures so you can do it in one day or two.
  3. Play around on the World Glacier Inventory site.  Read this article on the lost 8th continent.
  4. Research the Ring of Fire.  Present the information in visual form with decriptive captions similar to how your Smithsonian Geography book is organized.
  5. On a map of the world, draw the equator, the  prime meridian, the tropic of cancer and the tropic of capricorn.  Label the Arctic Cirlce and the Antarctic Cirle.

Eighth Grade Week Three: September 18-22, 2023

Just like last week,  I planned only four days for religion, english roots, essay writing and geography so you won't have to do them on Wednesday.  

Some subjects you will need to work with me on, and they are marked, otherwise I am ALWAYS available to help you.  I loved hearing you play the piano at your recital!

We need to start off Monday talking about the readings from last week for He Leadeth Me, All Creatures Great & Small and Uprising.

ISEE Study 
1.  Do Sentence Completion #1-20 on pages 66-68
2.  Narrative Passage #2 on pages 84-85
3.  Narrative Passage #3 on pages 86-87
4.  Multiples 1-8 on pages 158-159.
5.  Do Sentence Completion #21-40 on pages 68-70

Math  - Chapter 1 of Elementary Algebra

Literature - this week I want you to finish reading Uprising by Haddix.  Read each day (22-25, 26-28, 29-30, 31-32, 33-34) and come discuss the chapters with Mom after you read them.

  3. Watch Jim Crow Laws and also watch Plessy vs Ferguson
  4. Read book on the Brooklyn Bridge - The Bridge.
  5. Read Book 8, Chapters 22, 23, 24.  Write 8-9 sentences about Pulitzer, Hearst, Ida or Muckrackers.  
Foundations 
Lesson 1
  1. Learn about time management.
  2. Here are some more time management tips for students.
  3. Take the time management quiz.
Lesson 2
  1. Watch the “Organize and Utilize School Planner” Video (6.21 Minutes)
Lesson3
  1. Read this article on Effective Time Management 
  2. Fill in your planner.  You will need to keep this up-to-date as I will do random spot checks of it.
 Lesson 4
  1. Put what you have learned into practice. Choose a goal. It can be an assignment, such as an essay, or learning vocabulary words, or something else.  I would suggest doing it with the project for geography.
  2. Set a deadline. Create smaller deadlines for what you are going to accomplish along the way and by when.
  3. Read through the first section on student strategies (until you get to a heading in green).

Lesson 5
Read All Creatures Great and Small Chapters 7-9 and come talk to Mom about what you read.  You can do this over several days or all in one day, I don't care.  If it is too hard to read after the bath it took, let me know and I will order you a new copy.

World Geography
  1. Read Smithsonian Geography pages 202-203 on population and look at the world population clock here
  2. Watch the Video, what is Human Geography.
  3. Watch this video on how populations grow and change
  4. You need to choose one book to read for this semester from the list provided here.  When you complete the book, you will give a powerpoint presentation on what you learned.  It is due January 19, 2024.  Let me know what book you choose so I can order it.

Week 2: September 11-15, 2023

Great first week!  We are going to add World Geography and Social Justice in this week.  I originally wanted to do them with Maura, but given her work schedule we will do geography on our own and only meet with her on Monday and Friday for Social Justice.  I want you to know that I love you.  I am proud of you.  I think you are terrific and I am glad you are mine.  

I planned only four days for religion, english roots, ISEE, essay writing and geography so you won't have to do them on Wednesday.

Lesson 3:  Read The Century for Young People Chapter 1 pages 3-mid way on page 11.  Read Grandfather's Journey and take an Interactive Tour of Ellis Island.
Lesson 4:  Read Book 8, Chapter 7 and You Wouldn’t Want to be a Worker on the Statue of Liberty.  Take a digital tour of the Statue of Liberty.  Write 8-9 sentences telling me all about the Statue of Liberty - where it came from, when it arrived, how it was built, etc.
Lesson 5:    Read book 8, chapters 14-16.

Foundations 

Lesson 1

  1. Learn about learning.
  2. You will learn some study skills.  You need to apply these lessons in all your other studies.
  3. Here are some simple ways to approach the process: Before you read a text, make sure you know what the follow-up assignment is going to be so you can keep it in mind as you read. If there are questions to answer afterward, read them first and then the answers will stand out as you read. While you read, take note of information that would be useful for your assignment and where that info is found so you can find it again if needed. If you just need to learn the information for a potential test, take notes by writing down main words.

Lesson 2

  1. Watch the video on procrastination.
  2. Here are some simple ways to approach the reviewing process: After you’ve gone through the assigned material, complete the assignment. Check your answers and go over anything you got wrong and take the time to understand the correct answer. Get any help needed to make sure you understand before you move on.

Read All Creatures Great and Small Chapters 4-6 and come talk to Mom about what you read.  You can do this over several days or all in one day, I don't care.  

World Geography
1.  Read World Geography textbook pages 3-15, 19-22.  Set up a geography notebook with tabs for lessons, maps, vocabulary and activities and memory lists.
3.  Watch this youtube video on longitude and latitude.  Start to fill in the Geography vocabulary packet, do latitude, longitude and hemisphere.
4.  Read this explanation of map projections Do the hands-on activity on pages 8, 11 and 12 in the Physical Geography book.
5.  Read this on the world's biomes.  Look through each type briefly. Using a blank world map, label all the continents and oceans.
