Eighth Grade Week Six: October 9-13, 2023

I am ALWAYS available to help you.  I love you and I am proud of you!

ISEE Study 
1.  Do descriptive passage 2 on pages 118-119 of your ISEE book.  
2.  Review how to find the median.  Remember, this is different than the mean we did last week.  You will  need a way to remember what each term means. 
3.   Do Expository passage 2 on pages 134-135 of your ISEE book.
4. Practice essay today.  See Mom for prompt and timing.
5.  Review how to find the mode.  This is different than both mean and median.  You need to remember which method goes with which word.  I remember mode and most both start the same, but whatever trick works for you.

Math  - Chapter 2/3 of Elementary Algebra
Please come ask me if you don't understand something she taught you or have other questions.  I will be grading your work each day so that we can discuss anything you didn't understand before the next lesson.

Chapter 3, Lesson 4: Watch video. Do all of Set 1 and Set 2.
Chapter 3, Lesson 5: Watch video. Do all of Set 1 and Set 2 - 12, 13, 14, 16 a, c, e, g, i, k, 17 a, b, d, 18, 19

Chapter 3, Summary and Review: All of Set 1.

Religion & Bible History (None Wednesday) 

  • Read Faith and Life 8 Chapter 6.  Discuss with Mom.
  • Read Heavens Roar pages the correspond, then read your Bible Mark 3:7-19. 
  • Read Bible History Unit 5 Part 4: 4-5 and do the questions.
  • Read He Leadeth Me chapter 5 and discuss it with Mom.

Language Arts

Literature (None Wednesday)

  1. Read letters 19-21 and come see Mom to do study questions.
  2. Read letters 22-24 and come see Mom to do the study questions.
  3. Read letters 25-27 and come see Mom to do the study questions.   
  4.  “Certainly we do not want men to allow their Christianity to flow over into their political life, for the establishment of anything like a really just society would be a major disaster.”  Write several paragraphs explaining what Screwtape means by this quote and giving some examples of how this is relevant today.

English From the Roots Up 

  • Test Monday since we forgot on Friday.
  • Learn the three new roots for this week - skopeo, video/visum, logos
  • List as many extra words that fit the new roots as you can on a piece of paper.
  • Study the roots throughout the week.  
Middle School Essay Writing (None Wednesday)
Instead of moving on this week, we are going to take the Persuasive Essay from last week and work together to revise it on Monday and Tuesday.  Then, nothing on Wednesday and I will add lessons for Thursday and Friday after the 5-paragraph essay book I ordered arrives this week.

Modern World History 
  1. Watch the story of the Wright Brothers here, then read The Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire then  watch 1906 Footage of the SF Earthquake.
  2. Watch about the North Pole Exploration of 1909.  Read I, Matthew Hansen
  3. Watch Ntl Geographic Secrets of the Titanic on the TV and look at book on the Titanic from Ntl Geo Kids.
  4. Read Book 8 Chapers 35, 36.  Do the 1911 vs. 2023 Cost of Living worksheet Mom printed and use the inflation calculator to plug in values.  
  5. Look at The Century for Young People Chapter 2 pages 23-44.
Foundations

Lesson 1

Take notes on one of your videos for History today or tomorrow.  Show Mom your notes.

Lesson 2

Take notes on one article you read this week for World Geography.  Show Mom your notes.

Watch the “Marking A Text” Video (3.55 Minutes)

Lesson 5
Read All Creatures Great and Small Chapters16-18 and come talk to Mom about what you read.  This doesn't have to be saved for Friday, you can read it over the course of the week if you wish.

World Geography
  1. Read Geography: A Visual Encyclopedia pages 122-151.
  2. Read about climate change at the link here  Be sure to explore the difference between climate change and global warming at the related articles link on the right hand side of the page.
  3. Read this article on how climate changing is affecting the earth's ecosystems.
  4. Watch this video on classifying climates.
  5. What climate-related issue do you think will become most vital to address in your lifetime?  Why?  Explain your answer in writing.
Social Justice/Catholic Social Teaching
Monday and Friday at 9 a.m. with Maura and Mom.

Exploring Electronics & Down to Earth
