Eighth Grade Week Seven: October 16-20, 2023

You have your dentist appointment Thursday, and I wasn't sure how you are going to feel after, so I did not plan any work for that day this week.  Instead, we will watch the movie The Last Emperor if you are up for it. I love you and I am proud of you!

ISEE Study (no Thursday)
1. You missed this last week, so practice an essay today.  See Mom for prompt and timing.
2. Do the root of numbers in the ISEE book on page 168-170.  If you don't know how to work them, review how to do roots of numbers here or ask Mom to work through them with you.
3.  Do vocabulary #41-60 on pages 70-72 of the ISEE book.
4. Do the percent change on pages 176-177 of the ISEE book.

Math  - Chapter 2/3 of Elementary Algebra (no Thursday)
Please come ask me if you don't understand something she taught you or have other questions.  I will be grading your work each day so that we can discuss anything you didn't understand before the next lesson.

Chapter 3, Summary and Review: All of Set 2.

Chapter 4, Lesson 1.  Watch the video and do all of sets 1 and 2.
Chapter 4, Lesson 2.  Watch the video and do all of sets 1 and 2.

Religion & Bible History (None Wednesday/Thursday) 

  • Read Faith and Life 8 Chapter 7.  Discuss with Mom.
  • Read Heavens Roar pages the correspond, then read your Bible Mark 3:20-35. 
  • Read He Leadeth Me chapter 6 and discuss it with Mom.

Language Arts

Literature (None Wednesday/Thursday)

  1. Read letters 28-29 and come see Mom to do study questions.
  2. Read letters 30-31 and come see Mom to do the study questions.
  3. Read Screwtape Proposes a Toast and come see Mom to do the study questions.   

English From the Roots Up 

  • Learn the three new roots for this week - verbum, nomen/nominis, pro
  • List as many extra words that fit the new roots as you can on a piece of paper.
  • Study the roots throughout the week.  
Middle School Essay Writing (None Wednesday/Thursday)
  • Monday, just do the practice ISEE essay.
  • Tuesday, read page 13 in How to Write a 5-paragraph essay on converting a prompt to a claim and do the exercises on pages 14/15.
  • Friday, Read page 16 in How to Write a 5-paragraph essay nn identifying supporting reasons and do the exercise on page 17.

Modern World History (None Thursday)
Do WWI Lesson 1 on the Causes of WWI
Do WWI Lesson 2 on Messages and Propaganda
Do WWI Lesson 3 on the Western Front
Do WWI Lesson 4 on Trench Warfare

Foundations (None Thursday)
Lesson 1
Watch this video on procrastinating and this one on how to study for a test.

Lesson 2
  • Look over the document I printed on Test Preparation Strategies.  Place this in your binder for reference.
  • Look over the document I printed on how to study for a math test.  Place this in your binder for reference.
Lesson 3
Look over the Test Taking Strategies I printed.  Place this in your binder for reference.

Lesson 4
  1. Look over and make sure you are familiar with the 12 Power Words for tests I printed.
  2. Read this Article on Studying for a Test

World Geography (None Thursday)
  1. Read about the different elements that make up Global cultures such as Language, Government, Religion etc.  Read pages 80-85 in the World Geography book.  Watch the Crash Course video on Race, Ethnicity and Culture.
  2. Read about the different Political and Economic systems.  Read pages 86-90 in the World Geography book.  Watch the Crash Course video on Capitalism, Communism and Political Economies.
  3. Watch the video about Economic Systems here.
  4. Read about Resources, Trade and the Environment.  Read pages 91-95 in the World Geography book.
Social Justice/Catholic Social Teaching
Monday at 9 a.m. with Maura and Mom and Friday at 9 a.m. this week is just you and I since Maura will be traveling.
