Eighth Grade Week Seven: October 16-20, 2023

You have your dentist appointment Thursday, and I wasn't sure how you are going to feel after, so I did not plan any work for that day this week. Instead, we will watch the movie The Last Emperor if you are up for it. I love you and I am proud of you!

ISEE Study (no Thursday)

1. You missed this last week, so practice an essay today. See Mom for prompt and timing.

2. Do the root of numbers in the ISEE book on page 168-170. If you don't know how to work them, review how to do roots of numbers here or ask Mom to work through them with you.

3. Do vocabulary #41-60 on pages 70-72 of the ISEE book.

4. Do the percent change on pages 176-177 of the ISEE book.

1. Do descriptive passage 2 on pages 118-119 of your ISEE book.

2. Review how to find the median. Remember, this is different than the mean we did last week. You will need a way to remember what each term means.

3. Do Expository passage 2 on pages 134-135 of your ISEE book.

4. Practice essay today. See Mom for prompt and timing.

5. Review how to find the mode. This is different than both mean and median. You need to remember which method goes with which word. I remember mode and most both start the same, but whatever trick works for you.

Eighth Grade Week Five: October 2-6, 2023

MONDAY - You will take an online ISEE practice test today that will help us know where to focus our prep moving forward. This is all you will do today. Ask Mom to log you in on the main computer to take it. Remember, guesses are okay if you don't know and try to answer all the questions.

We need to start off Tuesday talking about the readings from last week for He Leadeth Me and All Creatures Great & Small.

ISEE Study - Remember that on the ISEE there is no penalty for guessing. If you don't know the answer to a question, take your best guess.

1. Work on percent change problems here. Do questions 1-10 on Your Turn at the bottom of the page. Use paper to work them out.

2. Practice figuring out mean here. Do the twenty on pages 1 and 2. They give you the answers but try to work them out before looking. Use paper to work them out if you need.

3. Work on fractions, decimals, percents here. Do questions 1-12 in Your Turn.

4. Practice essay today. See Mom for prompt and timing.

Literature We are starting Screwtape Letters this week, which is a satirical work by CS Lewis in which he relays the fictional written correspondence between a wise old devil, Screwtape, and his nephew, a novice devil named Wormwood. Screwtape coaches Wormwood in the process of winning the soul of a young man for “Our Father Below,” Satan.

Read the two quotes before the Preface, the Preface and Letters 1-3. Come see Mom to do the study questions out loud.
Read letters 4-6 and come see Mom to do the study questions.
Read letters 7-9 and come see Mom to do the study questions.
In letter 8, Screwtape says, “Now it may surprise you to learn that in His efforts to get permanent possession of a soul, He relies on the troughs even more than on the peaks; some of His special favorites have gone through longer and deeper troughs than anyone else.” Explain this quote in writing and give examples of saints or others who have experienced this.

It talked about reviewing your notes that same day. Another thing you can do the same day, is to go into your learning with a question. A question peaks curiosity which excites the brain to learn. Write a question that will push your learning further for each of the courses you are taking.

Read Smithsonian Geography pages 12-49. This is a lot of pages but many pictures so you can do it in one day or two.
Play around on the World Glacier Inventory site. Read this article on the lost 8th continent.
Research the Ring of Fire. Present the information in visual form with decriptive captions similar to how your Smithsonian Geography book is organized.
On a map of the world, draw the equator, the prime meridian, the tropic of cancer and the tropic of capricorn. Label the Arctic Cirlce and the Antarctic Cirle.

Fill in your planner. You will need to keep this up-to-date as I will do random spot checks of it.

Lesson 4

Put what you have learned into practice. Choose a goal. It can be an assignment, such as an essay, or learning vocabulary words, or something else. I would suggest doing it with the project for geography.
Set a deadline. Create smaller deadlines for what you are going to accomplish along the way and by when.
Read through the first section on student strategies (until you get to a heading in green).

Lesson 5

Read All Creatures Great and Small Chapters 7-9 and come talk to Mom about what you read. You can do this over several days or all in one day, I don't care. If it is too hard to read after the bath it took, let me know and I will order you a new copy.

Read Smithsonian Geography pages 202-203 on population and look at the world population clock here

I originally wanted to do them with Maura, but given her work schedule we will do geography on our own and only meet with her on Monday and Friday for Social Justice. Foundations

Lesson 1

Learn about learning.
You will learn some study skills. You need to apply these lessons in all your other studies.
Here are some simple ways to approach the process: Before you read a text, make sure you know what the follow-up assignment is going to be so you can keep it in mind as you read. If there are questions to answer afterward, read them first and then the answers will stand out as you read. While you read, take note of information that would be useful for your assignment and where that info is found so you can find it again if needed. If you just need to learn the information for a potential test, take notes by writing down main words.

Lesson 2

Here are some simple ways to approach the reviewing process: After you’ve gone through the assigned material, complete the assignment. Check your answers and go over anything you got wrong and take the time to understand the correct answer. Get any help needed to make sure you understand before you move on.

World Geography
1. Read World Geography textbook pages 3-15, 19-22. Set up a geography notebook with tabs for lessons, maps, vocabulary and activities and memory lists.
3. Watch this youtube video on longitude and latitude. Start to fill in the Geography vocabulary packet, do latitude, longitude and hemisphere.
4. Read this explanation of map projections Do the hands-on activity on pages 8, 11 and 12 in the Physical Geography book.
5. Read this on the world's biomes. Look through each type briefly. Using a blank world map, label all the continents and oceans.

Exploring Electronics & Down to Earth
Do any homework or assignments from these classes before Wednesday. (There weren't any this week, I know).

Week 1: September 4-8, 2023

Welcome to Eigth Grade! This is going to be a big year for you with applying to Eastside Catholic and potentially your last year homeschooling. I want you to know that I love you. I am proud of you. I think you are terrific and I am glad you are mine.

These subjects can be done in any order you want. I want you to do Algebra, Foundations and Writing every day. If you want to double up your history and religion lessons and do more than one in a day so you don't have to do them on Wednesday, that is up to you as long as they are all done by the end of the day on Friday.

Some subjects you will need to work with me on, and they are marked, otherwise I am ALWAYS available to help you.

ISEE Study

English From the Roots Up

Learn the three new roots for this week - photos, graph and tele
List as many extra words that fit the new roots as you can on a piece of paper.
Study the words throughout the week.

Modern World History

Lesson 1: Watch the Video America: Story of US Episode 7. Do video discussion questions and vocabulary with Mom when done. Words include: audacious, filament, irrevocable, molten, rogue, tenement, unscrupulous, veritable.

Lesson 2: Read book 7 (Reconstructing America) Chapters 11, 12 & 15. Look over the Homestead Act handout. Discuss what you read with Mom.

Lesson 3: Read book 7, Chapter13 & 14. Tell Mom three things you learned about the Transcontinental Railroad.

Lesson 4: Read Book 8 the Preface, 1, 2 and 5. Tell Mom three thingsyou learned about Robber Barons.

Foundations

Lesson 1: You are going to be learning lots of different things in this course. This is a course to apply to your life, not just get through. You get to decide how important you make what you learn here. It can be valuable to you if you choose to make it so! Stop and think about what motivation you have for learning.
