8th Grade Week Nine: October 30-November 3, 2023

You have the dentist Monday, and Mom will be gone Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.  If you need anything while I am gone, just skip it and we will deal with it when I am back on Thursday.  Great job so far; I appreciate how hard you are working.  I love you and I am proud of you!

Literature 

  1. Monday, we will start to read Animal Farm.  This is set entirely on an English Farm during the rise of Communism.  The farm is home to a human family and their workers, pigs, horses, a donkey, dogs, chickens and cows.  All of the animals are personified, and some of them represent actual political figures.  Come discuss the author/book with Mom before starting.  Then, read the biography, preface and introduction.  
  2. Tuesday, read chapters 1 and 2 and discuss with Mom.  Do the two worksheets for chapters 1 and 2 that Mom will give you.
  3. Thursday, read chapters 3 and 4 and discuss with Mom.  Do the two worksheets for chapters 3 and 4 that Mom will give you.
  4. Friday, read chapter 5.  Then in writing answer "Is life after the Rebellion better, worse, or the same as before the Rebellion?  Why?  Use examples from the book to defend your answer."

English From the Roots Up 

  • Learn the three new roots for this week - pono/positum, cum, figo/fixum
  • List as many extra words that fit the new roots as you can on a piece of paper.
  • Study the roots throughout the week.

  1. Watch the video about verbal and non-verbal communication.
World Geography 
  1. Read World Geography pages 133-137, 140-151 and 157-172.  You will probably want to split this up over several days.
  2. Read this article on the earliest inhabitants of North America.
  3. Look at Smithonian Geography pages 220-221 and 168-169.
  4. On a map of Canada, label each province and territory.  Notice that some of the borders are very straight while others are very convoluted.  Try to figure out why.  Mark the capital of Canada and the capital of the United States.  Label them.  Add the symbol you used for the capital to your map key.  Add the major cities of each country.  Make sure the symbol used to mark the cities is different than the one used to mark the capitals.  Add the city symbol to your map key.

8th Grade Week 8: October 23-27, 2023

We are almost 1/4 of the way through the school year.  Great job so far; I appreciate how hard you are working.  I love you and I am proud of you!

ISEE Study 
1. Do the percent change on pages 176-177 of the ISEE book.
2.  Do Narrative Passage #4 and #5 on pages 88-91 of the ISEE book.
3.  Do the conditional probability on page 264-266 of the ISEE book.  If you need a reminder on how to do probability, ask me.
4.  Do vocabulary #61-77 on pages 72-74 of the ISEE book.
5. Look at some of the vocabulary words you have missed so far and see if you can determine what each means based on the sentence.  Try to add 5 of these words to your memory if you can.

Lesson 5

  1. You are going to need your signature to make official many documents in your lifetime. One such document is the check, a method of payment. Before we get to that, let’s start with learning about banks.
  2. Write your signature. We call it “signing your name.” When you need to sign something, you have to write your full name, no nicknames, and sometimes your middle name is required.
  3. Read about how banks work. Scroll down and read the first five pages. Stop at “Credit Unions.

World Geography 
  1. Read World Geography pages 100-126.
  2. Look at Smithsonian Geography pages 250-251.
  3. Read this article on how the Great Lakes were formed.
  4. Read this article on the Climate of the Arctic.
  5. On a map of world mark the US and Canada.  Then, on a map of North America, refer to the lines of latitude and longitude to help you label the Great Lakes; label the major bays and islands in northern Canada and along its Atlantic and Pacific coasts.  You don't have to try to include every single thing - just choose the major landforms and water features.  Label the major mountain ranges and rivers.  Label them.  You can decide how you'd like to indicate mountain ranges.  Look at a variety of maps to get ideas.  Use your discretion when deciding what mountain ranges and rivers to add-this is your map.  Finally, add a map key in one corner of your map.  In this key, draw the symbolx you are using and label them.  For instance, you might have a symbol like this ^ to show mountains, adn blue lines to show rivers.

Eighth Grade Week Seven: October 16-20, 2023

You have your dentist appointment Thursday, and I wasn't sure how you are going to feel after, so I did not plan any work for that day this week.  Instead, we will watch the movie The Last Emperor if you are up for it. I love you and I am proud of you!

ISEE Study (no Thursday)
1. You missed this last week, so practice an essay today.  See Mom for prompt and timing.
2. Do the root of numbers in the ISEE book on page 168-170.  If you don't know how to work them, review how to do roots of numbers here or ask Mom to work through them with you.
3.  Do vocabulary #41-60 on pages 70-72 of the ISEE book.
4. Do the percent change on pages 176-177 of the ISEE book.

Eighth Grade Week Six: October 9-13, 2023

1.  Do descriptive passage 2 on pages 118-119 of your ISEE book.  
2.  Review how to find the median.  Remember, this is different than the mean we did last week.  You will  need a way to remember what each term means. 
3.   Do Expository passage 2 on pages 134-135 of your ISEE book.
4. Practice essay today.  See Mom for prompt and timing.
5.  Review how to find the mode.  This is different than both mean and median.  You need to remember which method goes with which word.  I remember mode and most both start the same, but whatever trick works for you.

Instead of moving on this week, we are going to take the Persuasive Essay from last week and work together to revise it on Monday and Tuesday.  Then, nothing on Wednesday and I will add lessons for Thursday and Friday after the 5-paragraph essay book I ordered arrives this week.

  1. Watch the story of the Wright Brothers here, then read The Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire then  watch 1906 Footage of the SF Earthquake.
  2. Watch about the North Pole Exploration of 1909.  Read I, Matthew Hansen
  3. Watch Ntl Geographic Secrets of the Titanic on the TV and look at book on the Titanic from Ntl Geo Kids.
  4. Read Book 8 Chapers 35, 36.  Do the 1911 vs. 2023 Cost of Living worksheet Mom printed and use the inflation calculator to plug in values.  
  5. Look at The Century for Young People Chapter 2 pages 23-44.

  5. What climate-related issue do you think will become most vital to address in your lifetime?  Why?  Explain your answer in writing.

Eighth Grade Week Five: October 2-6, 2023

MONDAY - You will take an online ISEE practice test today that will help us know where to focus our prep moving forward.  This is all you will do today.  Ask Mom to log you in on the main computer to take it.  Remember, guesses are okay if you don't know and try to answer all the questions.

We need to start off Tuesday talking about the readings from last week for He Leadeth Me and All Creatures Great & Small.

ISEE Study - Remember that on the ISEE there is no penalty for guessing.  If you don't know the answer to a question, take your best guess.
1.  Work on percent change problems here.  Do questions 1-10 on  Your Turn at the bottom of the page.  Use paper to work them out.
2.  Practice figuring out mean here.  Do the twenty on pages 1 and 2.  They give you the answers but try to work them out before looking.  Use paper to work them out if you need.
3.  Work on fractions, decimals, percents here.  Do questions 1-12 in Your Turn.
4.  Practice essay today.  See Mom for prompt and timing.

  4. Watch Video on Simple History: Ford Model T.  Look at Time for Kids Henry Ford.  Write for me a story:  Your family has just purhcased one of the first model T cars ever produced.  Where do you go, and what is the trip like?
